I haven't bought a mouthpiece in a while but am thinking of making some changes in my playing.  What is the general quality now in the current mouthpieces made by Bach?  Any consistency?

Good question. I heard that the quality was supposed to have been greatly improved, but I haven't been in a music store in so long I can't say if that is true or not. I need to get a new mouthpiece as well. I am probably going to buy a standard Bach piece and do some modification to it on my own.

I have played on a Bach 3G Trombone mouthpiece for about 8 months. The plating has worn through where it is inserted into the shank, but it was played on a Conn 88H with a longer shank. Seems a bit thin, especially in comparison with vintage bach. My early 60's pieces show no sign of wearing through.

Sixharmonies,

What modifications do you make to your own mouthpieces?

Tbnchris,

I will sometimes open up the throat with a drill press. Maybe center the shank as well. In the past I have reduced the length of the shank. These are some of the mods that I have made over the years.

Be well.

I tried the Conn equivalent of the 6 1/2 AL and hated it.  I love the Bach 5G and 1 1/2G Megatones.
