Become a moocher.  Never pay for anything that you could mooch off of someone else.  Become a bum.  Save all of your resources, trust me you are going to need them.  Becareful  however adopting this approach.  Having seen the Big Lebowski mentioned in the movie thread, this is a picture of what you could become:

Don't forget one of the greatest moochers of all time:

When I was in college, I knew a couple of jazz guys that were so short of cash that they went on a potatoe diet.  One of those guys ended up in the Airmen of Note, so maybe there is something to it.  Come to think of they were a bit like The Dude and Cosmo Kramer.  LOL.

I knew a great musician in college that had no bed upon
moving in and found an old mattress on the side of the road
and slept in the closet of his roommates!!

Open several savings accounts at your bank for different purposes and be sure to deposit a little in them each time you get paid (if you can literally afford to). You will be surprised how much money you would've wasted if you didn't put it away.

Budget, budget, budget! Get a spreadsheet program (Excel if you can afford it or already have it) or the Google version. Make up a simple spreadsheet (or complex with formulas and categories, like I did) and keep track of every purchase. Online banking these days makes this a -snap-.

As far as actual money-saving tips, set up a culture that doesn't encourage you to spend:
-Live close to gig opportunities
-Carpool
-Travel as little as possible (driving, bus, train, etc.)
-Clip coupons -- and only buy items on sale, and buy in bulk or buy large quantities at sale prices
-Rebuild your goals to focus heavily on your success in music -- you need every resource for this career.
-Eat well and exercise (to avoid doctor bills)
-Keep yourself mentally stimulated (to avoid needing to buy comfort foods, etc.)

I came up with these off the top of my head. Others, anyone?

Personally I like the Moocher approach.

But seriously Millwood did give some great advice.  Are you sure you are a private teacher?  Sounds a little to organized to me.Undecided

Yeah, I am, actually...I just wish there were more money in it. I teach double reeds. ;)

No money in it? Why am I doing this?????? Smile

Good advice though.  A couple of years ago I started and IRA.  No retirement in this line of work.  Not sure how long I will continue.

I still like my Moocher approach.  Beats saving for this and saving for that, blah, blah, blah..................................Wink

The Blues Brothers seemed to have it all figured out.

Mooching.... There's a guy that still owes me about $700 for girl scout cookies, ham sandwiches, chocolate covered pretzels that expired, and individual packets of pudding that he mooched when we were in High School.

For those of you who don't believe Jota, it works (almost unfortunately!!!!).....

So is it concluded that the Moocher system answers the original question.  No offense Millwood.Wink

Why do I get the feeling that this is soon to become a fact of our lives as private teachers.

That feeling has been with some of us since 9-11. Less students & gigs. Many of us have been discussing the matter and have come to the conclusion that the good old days may be over.

Thought with all things considered I would bring this excellent thread to the front of the line again.

Is this now becoming a reality for some of us?  It is beginning to look thin & grim,
